test drive 2.0

Hi all, the other TDM was getting a bit unwieldy, so here's an overflow post! Feel free to repost starters from the old post and carry threads over, as well as make new ones. Threads here can still be considered game canon, so be sure to make decisions you don't mind carrying over later.

Otherwise, have fun, and thanks for coming! Reserves will open on November 25th, 12:01AM, so be sure to throw in a reserve if you'd like. Apps will open on December 1st, 12:01AM, and our current character cap is 90.

The town of Chantes has been dark since ALASTAIR first arrived here with your fellow travelers in tow. The sun stopped rising, night is forever here -- at least until our brave recruits get to the bottom of the mysteries of this town. But one thing at a time, right? For now: the darkness.

Prominent town inventor Edwin Brunswick has discovered a fantastic new source of light! He’s created a lantern that will give off a magically induced bright blue light for days, no more eating through lantern supplies faster than you budgeted for! He just needs an ingredient found only in the dark, eerie forest outside the town limits. It’s a good thing you got signed up to go and find it, huh? Maybe ALASTAIR wants to break in the new recruits, or maybe you’re just lucky. But either way, better get going. Those lanterns won’t light themselves!

New Recruits: for the purposes of the TDM, new characters can assume they’re with a fresh group of ‘recruits’ on a practice mission for ALASTAIR. They’ll be given a (brief) rundown on the overall situation. Additionally, the standard locations around town are also open for your perusal.

Characters In-Game: this mission is ICly optional, but characters will be alerted to the new recruits’ arrival through their network devices. It’s in your best interest that they all make it through this!

So what is this mystery ingredient, anyway? Why, fairy dust, of course!

No, just kidding, that would be trite. It’s fairy slime.

Out in the depths of the forest are nests of fairies. They’re tiny, insectoid creatures with two tiny humanoid legs and four tiny humanoid arms that want to poke, prod, and pinch anything that comes within range. And they’re quick, too! Those pretty gossamer wings aren’t just for show, they can fly about as fast as you can run. And as any child native to the town can tell you, they’re highly territorial.

Anyone who ventures into the forest is given a jar to collect the blue-shining magical goo, and cheerfully wished good luck. But it can’t be that bad, right?

You’ve braved the fairies and delivered the fairy slime, and the spell is a success! Lanterns all over the city are brightly shining through the darkness. Edwin is very proud of himself. It’s been declared an impromptu holiday, and humans and goblins alike are out to have a good time after the day’s work is done in honor of the darkness being just a little less dark now.

But nothing ever goes just the way it was planned, does it? As it turns out, fairy slime is a little more volatile than Edwin counted on, and the blue lanterns are starting to have an odd effect in some places...

You’ve probably been in deep, dark forests before. But somehow, knowing that here the sun never rises makes it just a little deeper and darker than anticipated. Moonlight doesn’t even make it through the thick branches overhead, and if you haven’t brought a lightsource with you, chances are high you’ll be very swiftly and very hopelessly lost.

Is that quiet snap in the bushes another ALASTAIR recruit? A fairy, maybe? Or something more dangerous? It’s hard to say.

The villagers were right: the fairies are territorial. Very territorial. You might not even realize you’re close to a nest before the fairies start to notice you there. It might start with a sharp pinch at your side, but if that doesn’t deter you, the fairies will start to mean business.

They might be small, only four inches tall at most, but there are a lot of them! A typical nest houses about 500 fairies, and none of them are happy to have house guests. Each one glows a very faint blue, though, so if you pay attention and move fast, you might be able to keep track of them. But they don’t seem bothered by the darkness, and they can easily track you right back! You can expect anything from pinching, to hair-pulling, to sharp pokes in the eyes -- and the more enterprising fairies might even try making off with any smaller belongings they can reach. Or bigger belongings. How many fairies do you think it will take to cart off the friendly animal sidekick you showed up with? They certainly seem willing to find out!

The newly structured lanterns do exactly as advertised, casting ghostly blue light from every streetpost in the city. But they aren’t just for show -- it turns out fairly goop is magically reactive in the strangest ways. Maybe the effects are purely physical, leaving you oddly lightheaded before you float a couple feet in the air. Maybe it makes your hair glow the same, unnatural blue.

But the fae are known for all manner of moodiness and trickery; the lights may play tricks on the mind and vision, affecting temperaments and causing illusions. Your own magic may feel like it’s on the fritz -- better start moving, or get it under control before the townsfolk notice.

Throughout the whole of this mini-mission, old and new characters alike will have access to the network to communicate and collaborate. Fairies got you stranded up in a tree? Need some help in the city square? ALASTAIR provides a magical piece of jewelry that should help.

Remember, you get one username to identify you and one only — if you don't enter one, it will default to your real name (for example, Voldemort's would be tomriddle.) Choose wisely... or make it assfarts69, if that's your thing. More information on the network is here!

Feel free to take any of these prompts and run wild with them, or come up with your own adventures around Chantes and the surrounding forests! There’s plenty of room to explore, get horribly lost in the tangled woods, and get to know your fellow recruits in the downtime.

Lucifer Morningstar - The Sandman - OTA

[personal profile] felixculpa 2015-11-24 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's not the first time that Lucifer has found himself in a maze of darkness, and he doubts it will be the last. It's the sort of cliche that's terribly common, and yet each person that employs it thinks of themselves as original. To be fair, he's sure that it falls into the category of "tried and true," since so many mortals had a visceral aversion to darkness, but that was because they knew so little of it. Though really, that tended to be true of most things with them, didn't it? Ah, well.

The jar is tucked safely away into his long coat's pocket, and he strolls as casually through the forest as if he could see his way clearly. He can't, not really, but that's the thing with cliches. They're predictable. He can move carefully enough to avoid any of the roots in the way, and when he hears a rustle in the bushes, he barely glances towards it. ]

I'd advise you come out. If this the part of the tour of the dark woods that's meant to be a trap, I'd like to get it over with now rather than later.

[ He doesn't have time for nonsense!!! He'd like to get this fairy goo and get this over with, thanks. ]
[ When you possess Phenomenal Cosmic Power, your magic being on the fritz is generally not a good thing, but at the very least, Lucifer is careful to not let things get to out of hand. He may not have his full breadth of ability, which he doesn't exactly complain about (nor is he surprised), but it still causes some issues.

Aesthetic ones, mostly.

That fairy goop causes some problems as advertised, but for Lucifer, it manifests as the angelic wings that he usually wills away being quite visible. And it's no wonder that he does, since even if they're just as beautiful as you would imagine an angel's wings to be, they're definitely cumbersome. At least they match the black tie suit.

If this happens to catch your eye, Lucifer will notice and turn his attention your way. He doesn't seem very amused, since he's actually quite annoyed that he can't will them away so easily. But he's taking it in stride as best he can, though it may not seem like it. Some of those fairies just might get burnt to ash later... nbd... ]

[ He just levels a question flatly your way, since it seems he's assuming that you have one. ]
user: morningstar

If you're finding the fae particularly annoying, I recommend iron. Generally speaking, they're not fans. I'm usually not in the habit of selling out weaknesses, but I think considering their general annoyance, it's fair enough.

[ take advice from satan, what could possibly go wrong ]

Though fair warning, it might kill them. Weigh that against the annoyance as you'd like. [ ah, right, that ]

i dont think we should use anything that could kill them its not their fault that they are mad

[ I'm not saying that Lucifer is judging the typing ability here, but he might be... ]

Here, I feel I should stress "might". Faerie are diverse enough that I felt I should probably include the warning to avoid the trouble of hearing complaints about dead faeries.

[ and yet he got them anyways sigh ]

Though my sympathy is generally low even if it were fatal. Repercussions are natural when they're as irritating as this.

they are a bit troublesome. ["troublesome"] though I think it's warranted since it is their home. i don't think many of us tried asking politely first.

Personally? I would skip the iron and go straight to fire, but I realize that's not quite an option for everyone.

Yes, it is. But it gets the point across well enough that the rest won't bother. Who knows? Maybe they would stop completely. A reminder that not every being takes well to childish pranks could be valuable.

[ He wishes, but he won't. Probably. Even if setting a nest of faeries on fire would probably let him relax, he doesn't know who, if anyone, they're working under. He'd rather avoid a conflict with a greater Fae. ]

That depends entirely on how you present it. If they truly believe you'll do it again, then the will to live overpowers the will to pull pranks. Usually.

So, yes. I could. I generally prefer not to, but we'll see if they manage to pic up on the fact that it might not be a good idea.

[ Servants are attuned to the magic in those around them. Because of what they are, beings whose very existence as spirits depends on whether or not they have a source of power to draw on, magic (especially powerful magic) is like a beacon to them.

It's why, even though he is indeed staring, it isn't actually the wings he's looking at.

Archer is having a few problems of his own, at the moment -- his normally white hair is now blue, and every so often a few blades will manifest in his general vicinity before he can force them to dematerialize. His own mana is on the fritz, but really, what gets his attention is the sheer amount of power this individual seems to have. It dwarfs even the most powerful of Heroic Spirits, and truthfully, the only comparison he can draw is to the World itself -- something elemental that presides over human affairs.

It's stunning to say the very least, but he doesn't flinch when Lucifer looks his way. He is curious, not fearful, and though he'll keep his questions to himself for the moment, his interest is undeniably piqued. ]

My apologies.

[ He has been staring, and staring is a bit rude. ]

I don't believed I've ever encountered your like before.
felixculpa: (oh man! wonder if he'll ever know)

[personal profile] felixculpa 2015-11-27 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Though he may seem otherwise at times, at least Lucifer isn't quite all-knowing. He assumes that the comment does come from not being able to dismiss those wings without the concern of tampering with something else. Despite his reputation, Lucifer is anything but reckless. If being careful means revealing those angelic wings, so be it. He does feel like it's a bit showy, though. Being showy is best saved for special occasions. ]

I'd imagine not. Of my "like," I'd imagine I'm probably the most sociable one.

[ The Host rarely descended for any to see. By nature, that tended to make Lucifer the best known, though even he would say it's a former association much more than a current one. He shrugs, then laughs coolly. ]

Though I'm sure the Host would be offended at my being lumped together with them. But they're offended at most things. They're still a bit sour about a long passed conflict.
anti_altruisms: (Rejected by the world.)

[personal profile] anti_altruisms 2015-11-27 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[ The wings themselves are a bit of a giveaway, perhaps, but it's more the other's answer that gives him an inkling as to the identity of this individual. He was never especially religious in life, but it is the business of Heroic Spirits to be familiar with mythologies and legends, the stories that surround the creation of the world and what happened after.

He should be surprised, perhaps, but mostly, he isn't. If anything, it makes him wonder at the power of their so-called employers, who could call on this man and have him to answer. ]

In my experience, those whose existences defy the usual limits of time often hold grudges far longer than any other.

[ It's also more difficult to let go of old obsessions.

A few more swords materialize, and again, he has to make the effort to dismiss them. ]

I admit, I'm surprised. I didn't think it would be possible for them to call on someone like you.
felixculpa: (shrieking of nothing is killing me)

[personal profile] felixculpa 2015-11-27 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Completely true. Holding grudges is almost a hobby of beings that fall into that category. [ He shrugs ] Myself included, of course.

[ He regards Archer with a bit more attentiveness than he had been a moment ago, since it's not often that people aren't cowed by his presence. It's a natural side-effect of fame like Lucifer's, and it's one that he doesn't entirely dislike. A healthy dose of fear and respect did wonders for negotiations. But for more casual conversations like this, he absolutely prefers the more casual response. It means that the usual pitfalls of conversations can be avoided. Any time he an avoid saying "yes, that Lucifer," he's glad for it. ]

Make no mistake: I'm surprised as well. Usually anyone that wants to ask for my help has the courtesy to properly give me a call first. But considering they didn't, they'd probably also heard in advance that my answer would be "no" if they had.

[ Lucifer doesn't exactly help others out. He has no stake in others' affairs unless they further his own goals, and he pointedly doesn't get involved in conflict unless he has to. They've successfully forced his hand so that he has to, but... ]

Their realm, their rules. But our hosts may regret it later. Just because something is possible doesn't mean it's a good idea.
anti_altruisms: (Your morality disgusts me.)

[personal profile] anti_altruisms 2015-11-28 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
[ Maybe if he were "younger" and not as used to this sort of thing, he would feel something like trepidation or fear. He has a healthy enough respect for the powers of gods and demigods (having fought some of the latter himself), but very little actually intimidates him anymore.

After a moment, he scoffs quietly. ]

They must be very confident or very arrogant.

[ Perhaps both. He wonders still at ALASTAIR's capabilities, but the idea of humans actually calling Lucifer for help and expecting him to answer is honestly laughable. No more laughable, he supposes, than the Holy Grail War, but Heroic Spirits aren't granted a choice in the matter. ]

Is there a name you prefer to go by?
felixculpa: (with the sadmen roaming free)

[personal profile] felixculpa 2015-11-28 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Both, actually.

[ Lucifer responds smoothly, and there's a hint of a smile on his face at the comment. He absolutely knows that he's both, and it's also absolutely not something he sees any reason to tone down or alter... But that's perfectly in line with the idea of the angel so proud that he Fell, isn't it? He certainly thinks so. ]

Any of them work well enough. But "Lucifer" is the one that has the nicest ring, I think. Also technically the most accurate.

[ He gives his name so smoothly that it almost confirms that assessment in itself. There's an easy confidence, no grandeur, because he's arrogant enough to not feel the need for such a thing. His reputation precedes him... Whether that reputation is true or not. He rarely bothers to correct it.

As one of those swords appear, Lucifer turns his gaze towards it, and he nods in its direction. ]

That's an interesting party trick, by the way. I'd almost suggest you not bother with dismissing them, but I guess you'd be standing in a pile before long.

[personal profile] ninmu 2015-11-28 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
[ for most people, this would be the strangest thing they'd ever encountered; for Melan, it's... well, still strange, and certainly unexpected, but he deals with it the same way he deals with everything else. That is, in a calculated, logical fashion. As best as he can, anyway. It would be a gross exaggeration to call him nervous or jittery, but he's certainly unsettled, as much as a Monomakia can be, at being separated from Marin, especially after they'd finally managed to settle everything. Or he thought they had.

Perhaps this is just another layer of sabotage, and the renegades had actually destroyed space in such a manner that he ended up here. The thought crosses his mind, but - perhaps unfortunately - he's not the type to question things so much. They point him in what he assumes must be the right direction, he heads that way, and here he is, a seven-foot robot standing in the woods looking for fairies with an empty jar in his 'hands.' He's a living weapon. He's not good at this kind of thing. But if he has to do it to get back to the Funny World, he'll do it.

The darkness isn't an issue for him; he can see just fine. The bead of his rifle and the orange lens on his mask glow faintly in the shadows - meaning that as soon as he turns towards Lucifer's voice, his location will be pretty obvious. ]

This is not a trap. [ at least, not one that he laid. His voice is clear and sonorous and somewhat lacking in the emotions department. ] I am looking for fairy slime. Have you seen it?

[ at least he doesn't waste time?? ]
felixculpa: (don't turn your nose up)

[personal profile] felixculpa 2015-11-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[ As he steps out of the darkness, Lucifer ends up giving him a cursory look over. Interesting. He can tell what this creature is, since he's seen enough of them in human fiction to know what this is, but he hadn't thought he would meet humanity's attempt at playing Creator so soon. Though this creature may very well be from a bit further in time, he realizes, it's still a mild surprise.

But still. For an incredibly ancient being like Lucifer, even a mild surprise was a remarkable thing.

He pulls a jar out of his pocket, then turns it in his hand. It's quite empty, which is answer enough. ]

I haven't. It's difficult to find a good sample.
ninmu: (would you mind if i stay)

[personal profile] ninmu 2015-11-29 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
[ actually, he was built by a race of futuristic alien cats... but he's not wrong about the rest. If Melan notices his surprise, he doesn't show it. (He didn't.) Approaching what registers as a human to him is a risky move - they tend to run away from Monomakia after all the havoc they wreaked on Earth. Then again, he's entered a rip in the fabric of space and time, as far as he can tell. This human may not know anything about that. Regardless, he's pleased in his own way to have someone not run in the other direction on seeing him, and he lands on the ground softly where he was hovering, mask retracting back into his armor. ]

You are on the same mission, [ he comments, tilting his head at the jar. ] Then you've also been enlisted by ALASTAIR. We are allies.

[ he's a little simple ]
